KITS Glasses Review: What to Know Before You Buy

KITS is an online eyewear retailer that has a model with a strong focus on pricing. The company is able to offer quality glasses with a good variety of lens options at prices that are hard to beat elsewhere.

How Do They Work?

KITS is an online eyewear retailer with the stated goal of keeping prices low. They promise that orders will be 100% accurate and free of defects, with a replacement guarantee on orders that don’t meet that promise.

The site works much like other online glasses retailers. Customers select the product they want, choose from whichever customization options are available, and then place their orders.

What Does KITS Offer?

KITS sells eyeglasses, sunglasses, and contacts. They have a fairly wide selection, including designer brands and progressive lenses for customers who want higher end eyewear. Shipping will often be free, with standard shipping within the U.S. free for orders over $99.

While not unique to KITS, the company has frequent sales. More unique is their FIRST PAIR FREE deal where one can use the code “FREEKITS” to get a pair of frames from a fairly wide selection for free, up to $69 in value. This offer also includes basic lenses that fall within a fairly standard prescription window.

With this deal, a customer theoretically only pays for shipping. Returns and exchanges are still free and work just as they would with a normal purchase.

Pros & Cons

KITS is fairly impressive for those shopping on a budget. It allows a person to get a fairly solid deal on prescription glasses, with the cheapest options allowing you to get glasses for under $40, even before accounting for their FREEKITS offer discussed earlier. They also still have offers for people interested in designer brands and high-quality, feature-rich lenses.

Comparing the cost of different options on KITS can be a hassle, as the way different lens options affect pricing isn’t obvious until fairly late in the selection process.

Cost

KITS glasses frames theoretically start at $69, but at the time of this writing, a wide selection is on sale for $19. Comparing the cost of different lens options can be difficult, as noted earlier.

It seems the cost of lenses is focused into packages that the site only shows you late in the customization process. For example, one of the most expensive of these packages is for enhanced progressive lenses with light transitioning qualities and air-thin lenses, which adds $189 to the total cost of the glasses. Basic prescription lenses with no upgrades, meanwhile, appear to be free. The lens options most people will want will generally cost somewhere in the middle of these two extremes.

A Just the Basics package on standard prescription glasses cost $19 and comes with an anti-scratch coating and anti-reflective coating. The Workplace Bundle had similar features, but also came with blue light blocking and UV protection capabilities, with a total added cost of $49.

Contacts are also available and seem to be priced fairly standard for each available brand. An Acuvue Oasys 1-Day 90 Pack with HydraLuxe costs $104.99 per box. A Dailies AquaComfort Plus 90 Pack costs $76.90 per box.

Insurance Coverage

As is standard, KITS will count as an out-of-network provider under most insurance plans. We recommend visiting their page on how to get the most out of your insurance when making a purchase with them. They explain the basics of getting out-of-network purchases reimbursed (when valid) and outline how that process usually works.

How Do They Compare Pricewise to Competitors?

Price seems to be a big strength of KITS. While we didn’t like the way it could be hard to tell which customization options affected price for a lot of the purchasing process, the actual final totals for frames and lenses of different types lets a customer get fairly standard blue light blocking prescription glasses for under $80. This isn’t possible with all retailers.

A big place where you can save seems to be with frames. The company has a variety of frames available for bargain prices, and you can easily save $40 to $50 over what you might normally expect to pay by choosing a sensible pair of frames.

Shipping Information

Shipping with KITS is free for orders over $99. Otherwise, shipping costs a small fee.

This will be for standard shipping. Orders made Monday through Friday before 2 p.m. PST generally ship the same day.

The company also offers Express and Priority Mail for an additional fee.

How Does Ordering Work?

Ordering with KITS isn’t complicated. First, you select the base product you want to order. For glasses and sunglasses, this will mean first selecting a frame.

Then, you customize the product to your needs using any options available. Assuming you’re not buying contacts, this means selecting from a large pool of lens options, depending on the type of lens you need and any additional options like blue light blocking that you may want. More options selected usually means a higher total cost.

To make a prescription order, you will also need to input your eyewear prescription. If you don’t know what yours is, you will need to get a vision test either in person or online from an eye care professional. You may want them to explain your prescription, so it’s easier for you to put in and confirm its accuracy when making your order.

Once you have all the products in your cart that you want, set up your shipping information and choose how you will pay. Keep in mind that standard shipping is free for orders over $99, so you can potentially save some money if you have multiple items you may want and you order them together.

The company offers a free 30-day return policy and free 365-day exchanges, although this is only for products that are defective or unused.

Reviews & Brand Reputation

KITS has a good reputation online, with a rating of 4.6 stars on Trustpilot from a total of over 30,000 reviews. People seem broadly happy with the company’s pricing, customer service, and their overall ability to quickly resolve any issues that might occur.

Is KITS Worth It?

Based on our research and the company’s reputation, KITS is a retailer worth considering, especially for budget shoppers. They have some of the best deals available in terms of frames and lens options, even if other companies may be able to offer different frames or higher quality but more expensive lenses.

People seem to like KITS glasses. There doesn’t appear to be a major quality drop in order to make their pricing possible as is seen with some budget options.

Alternatives to Consider

We usually recommend considering some well-reviewed alternatives before committing to any one retailer. Some good options to look at include the following:

  • Eyebuydirect
  • Warby Parker
  • Firmoo
  • GlassesUSA
  • Liingo

If you value a good customer experience, like KITS is known for, Warby Parker specifically is also known for having a user-friendly web interface and a good mobile app that makes using their site an easy, straightforward process.
